Historic Highland Games cancelled as police launch 'financial irregularities' probe

A historic Highland Games has been cancelled amid a police investigation into “financial irregularities”.

The Dornoch Highland Games is an annual gathering which has occurred at Meadows Park in the county of Sutherland since 1835.

However, this year’s edition, due to begin on August 7, has been cancelled.

The committee conducted an internal review after the “discovery of significant financial irregularities” in the organisation’s accounts.

They then reported their findings to the police for further investigation. The committee has confirmed the “financial irregularities” are now the subject of a police probe.

A spokesperson said: “The Committee recognises the disappointment this announcement will cause to
competitors, volunteers, sponsors, patrons and local businesses, residents and visitors who support the Games each year.

“We thank the community for its understanding and patience during this difficult period and ask that the privacy of those involved in the investigation is respected.

“No further comment can be made whilst police enquiries are ongoing.”

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
