Primary school pupils were removed from their classroom after maggots began raining from the ceiling onto desks.
Children at Crown Primary School in Inverness were left horrified when the larvae dropped into study spaces during a lesson.
Teachers were forced to usher students out of classes and into an alternative location before pest control experts were called in to battle the infestation.
Highland Council said the situation was now being resolved following the initial report on Tuesday.
They added pupil disruption had been minimised and learning had continued.
The school remained open to students on Wednesday, but some students were shifted to different classrooms until the area could be properly cleared.
A Highland Council spokesperson added: “The school became aware of the issue on Tuesday, May 24 and moved pupils in the affected area to different workspaces so their learning was not disrupted.
“Pest control were immediately called to resolve this issue.”
