An 11th chicken has been abandoned in the same spot on the Isle of Lewis.

The hen was found by a dog walker in Pentland Road on Friday, who alerted the Scottish SPCA.

Ten hens have previously been dumped at the location, with five snatched by eagles before they could be rescued.

The Scottish SPCA has warned of the consequences for anyone found to have abandoned an animal.

The latest hen has been rehomed after its injuries were restricted to a squint beak.

Several similar incidents have been reported to the animal welfare charity over the past five years.

Scottish SPCA inspector Maggie Adkins, said: “We’d like to thank the member of public who alerted us to this hen.

“Unfortunately, this is not the first time we have had reports of hens and ducks in need of rescue over the last few years.

“Sadly, it seems to have becoming a dumping ground.

“The last time we were called to Pentland Road, ten hens were abandoned. Sadly, by the time we got there only five remained as the eagles took the others.

“Leaving the birds out here exposed to the elements and predators is not only cruel but also illegal.”
