Firefighters are battling a large blaze in the open in the Cairngorms National Park.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent four fire appliances and specialist wildfire resources to the area near Ryvoan Bothy around 11.49am on Wednesday.

Due to large volumes of smoke travelling towards populated areas nearby, residents in Aviemore, Glenmore and the surrounding communities should keep their windows and doors closed.

There are no reported casualties, fire crews said.

It comes amid a “very high risk” wildfire warning for the area and parts of southern and eastern Scotland from Wednesday until Monday.

Scotland is experiencing warm weather across the country, with long spells of sunshine and temperatures climbing into the high 20s later in the week.

A SFRS statement read: “If you are within this area and can see or smell smoke, please follow the same advice.

“While we want people to enjoy the good weather, we ask that anyone in the Cairngorms National Park near Aviemore and Glenmore avoid the area.

“This part of the Cairngorms National Park is popular with hillwalkers, and we ask that people remain vigilant while active firefighting continues.”
