A packet of crisps dating back nearly 50 years was found washed up on a beach – advertising the UK’s first budget airline.

The Golden Wonder crisps are believed to date from around 1974 or 1975, due to the closing date of a competition run in conjunction with Freddie Laker Airways.

The no-frills airline was launched in 1966 and went bust in 1982.

The packet of salt and vinegar crisps was found by Trish Brewster, 55, who knew it was old as soon as she spotted the name of the airline on the beach in Glenelg, near Skye.

She believes the packet is at least 46-years-old – if not older.

It advertised getting a plastic aeroplane for 90p if four coupons were collected from the back of crisp packets.

Trish said: “There was a competition on it which said it ended in March 1975.

“But it could be from 1974 – it is 46-years-old at least.

“Freddie Laker was just like RyanAir so when I saw that I knew it was old.

“We go with the dog for a walk and pick up rubbish, so much is washed up.

“We cleaned the beach and I found it washed up there.”

Wildlife lover Trish said she had no idea of the scale of marine plastic pollution until she moved to the coastal spot from York, with her partner.

She added: “Until we came up here I didn’t know what came out of the sea.

“There is all kinds of washed up stuff.

“We are now getting masks washed up.”

Other finds have included a Japanese bottle of bleach, and Robinsons jam lids with Golliwogs on them.

Reitree Trish added: “I collect stuff we find on the beach, it is very alarming.

“I found a mask wrapped around a bird, and this is just one beach in the whole of the world.”
