A consultation has been launched on the removal of over 100 public payphones in the Highlands.

BT is looking to remove 110 phones, which the telecoms company believes are no longer needed.

The Highland Council is encouraging members of the public to share their views on the proposals.

BT assessed the phones using criteria set out by the communications watchdog Ofcom.

Four of those facing the axe, including Roag and Aird of Sleat Aird on the Isle of Skye, Insh in Kingussie and High Street in Ardersier, Inverness, have had no calls made from them in the last 12 months.

The busiest phone, in Kinlochbervie, Lairg, has been used 42 times in the last year, while none of the phones have been used for helpline calls.

The Highland Council has asked those making representations to give as much detail as possible and has published a full list of affected sites on its website.
