'Catastrophic consequences' warning as five arrested over drug driving

Drivers have been warned over the “catastrophic consequences” of being behind the wheel while under the influence after five people were arrested for drug driving offences in the Highlands during the weekend.

Police say patrols carried out in the region on Saturday and Sunday resulted in four men and one woman being arrested for failing roadside drug wipes.

The men, aged 51, 43, 36 and 21, and the 21-year-old woman have all been charged with driving offences.

In addition to the five arrests 45 incidents of speeding were also detected and dealt with.

The arrests were part of Operation Cedar (challenge, educate, detect and reduce) that saw Highland and Islands road policing officers undertaking extra patrols.

Police have now warned the public about the “catastrophic consequences” of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.

Sergeant Neil MacDonald from the Highland and Islands Road Policing Unit said: “It’s very disappointing to see that there are a number of drivers who continue to take risks and put themselves and others in danger.

“The consequences of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs and speeding can be catastrophic and we will continue to carry out enforcement in order to change driver behaviour and reduce casualties.

“Also at this time of year, the change in clocks and deterioration in weather bring additional hazards and it’s essential that all road users think carefully about their actions and take steps to ensure both their driving and vehicle comply with regulations.”
