A man who slipped and suffered a leg injury in the Cairngorms was stretchered for nearly three hours to safety in blizzard conditions.

He is understood to have been taking part in winter training about 3,000 feet up Coire an t-Sneachda with the Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team from Cumbria.

The man was treated for his leg injury by fellow members before the Cairngorms Mountain Rescue Team arrived at the scene to escort him down at around 4pm on Friday February 9.

He was then taken by ambulance to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

Cairngorm Mountain Rescue team leader Willie Anderson said the operation involved 24 volunteers and took around six hours in total, due to extreme wintry conditions.

A statement read: “CMRT were called out to a male who had sustained a lower leg injury from a slip on ice.

“He was treated by fellow Mountain rescue team members from Kirkby Stephen Rescue Team before CMRT arrived to help stretcher the injured person back to the ski area car park.”
