Dramatic footage has emerged of a man rescuing a dog from a frozen loch near Aviemore.

The animal can be seen struggling in the icy water in Loch Morlich before the man wades in and rescues him.

The rescue was captured by photographer Roger Cruickshank, who was using a drone camera to film the loch on Saturday.

Mr Cruickshank, who is also an author writing a book about mental health, said: "I was using my drone flying over Loch Morlich last Saturday filming the sunset when a lady threw a ball onto the ice for her dog to fetch.

"The dog ran onto the ice about 30 metres and then fell in as the ice cracked around it. We really thought the dog was going to drown.

"I kept the drone overhead to ensure we knew exactly where it was when a man who decided to wade out by breaking through the ice went to get him. Luckily he managed and there were some cheers from the lochside."

The Scottish SPCA was warned dog owners to keep their pets on a leash when walking near icy water.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: "We strongly advise all owners to keep their dogs on leads when walking near frozen water.

"Every winter there are a number of incidents where dogs fall through ice and these can result in tragedy for both the dogs and their owners."
