A Scots MP has been forced to hand over nearly £900 after his claims for hotel bills were rejected by an expenses watchdog.

Western Isles member Angus MacNeil said the hotels were the best deals available at short notice.

But the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) said the costs exceeded the amount MPs are allowed to claim for hotel stays.

The maximum cost a minister can recover is £150 a night for a hotel in London and £120 elsewhere in the UK under normal circumstances.

Mr MacNeil, who owns homes in Fort William, Glasgow and London, made four claims for more than £150 for two and three-night stays in the capital last year. He also made a £155 claim for a hotel outside London.

For bills totalling £2358 between May and June, the SNP MP was reimbursed a total of £1470.

Mr MacNeil said he had attempted to contact Ipsa and claimed he would not have been allowed to stay in his London flat under expenses rules.

Moray SNP MP Angus Robertson was forced to pay £110 in June 2015 after Ipsa rejected his claim for parking at Aberdeen Airport. Dundee West SNP MP Chris Law had a £4.30 claim rejected the same month.

No other Scottish MPs have had claims rejected since May's general election, according to Ipsa figures.
