A man has died after a house fire in the Highland village of Helmsdale.

Approximately 20 firefighters from Helmsdale, Golspie, and Dunbeath were called to the fire at 4.30pm on Saturday.

They reported the Trentham Street house was well-alight, with flames and thick black smoke coming from the ground floor.

They tried gave first aid to the man before he was taken to hospital via air ambulance.

The man, who has not yet been formally identified, was confirmed dead shortly after.

Officials also confirmed that two dogs were also found within the house and did not survive.

Incident Commander Ricky Dibble said: "This was obviously a very difficult and serious fire to deal with but the fire crews worked tirelessly throughout.

"Their professionalism is to be commended, as the rescue was carried out quickly and effectively in extremely adverse conditions."

Group Manager Antony Gardner added: "The fire crews demonstrated exemplary levels of courage and compassion in attempting all that was possible to save the gentleman’s life.

"Our thoughts are now with the family and friends of the gentleman involved."

A fire investigation is ongoing to establish the cause.
