A trailer for a horror comedy movie about killer midges set in the Scottish Highlands has been released.
What began as a light-hearted social media post evolved into the grisly project based on every Scot’s worst nightmare.
The film, aptly titled Midgies, was originally conceived as a joke but quickly gained momentum and attracted attention from both filmmakers and media outlets.
Fort William-based author Barry Hutchison is now set to write the script for the film, which sees a swarm of “mutant flesh-eating midges” terrorise the Highlands.
After the idea “took on a life of its own”, Mr Hutchison teamed up with Glasgow-based director Alessio Avezzano, known for his work with major brands like Irn Bru and Porsche, as well as his BBC sitcom Islelanders.
Now the team has produced a three-minute proof-of-concept trailer on a micro-budget, which was shot over two days in and around Glasgow and Loch Lomond.
With the help of a dedicated crew and local studios, the trailer showcases a blend of horror and dark humour that Hutchison and Avezzano envisioned.
“We were blown away by the talent and dedication from everyone involved,” Hutchison says. “Now, we’re pushing to begin full production as early as next summer.”
Midgies follows a mother and her teenage daughter on a road trip through the Highlands, which takes a deadly turn when they encounter a swarm of mutant midges.
