Scots wrestler becomes first Briton to win WWE Royal Rumble

Scottish wrestler Drew McIntyre has become the first Brit to win the men’s WWE Royal Rumble.

The 34-year-old, from Prestwick in Ayrshire, has now earned a title shot at this year’s Wrestlemania event after following in the footsteps of wrestling legends such as Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Undertaker by being the last man standing at the iconic 30-man brawl held in Texas on Sunday night.

The former Glasgow Caledonian University student, who has previously held the intercontinental championship, becomes the first ever British athlete to win the event that has been held every year since the inaugural rumble in 1987.

McIntyre eliminated both world champion Brock Lesnar and fans favourite Roman Reigns from the ring to set up a potential Wrestlemania clash with Lesnar in Florida.

Lesnar had single-handedly eliminated 13 other men before McIntyre threw him over the top ropes.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Flair earlier won the women’s Royal Rumble, to equal the accomplishments of her father, ‘Nature Boy’ Ric Flair, who was crowned champion after winning the men’s event in 1992.
