Just over 30 years ago, an unknown band from Manchester called Oasis blagged their way onto a gig at renowned Glasgow venue King Tut’s.

The band turned up uninvited at the club’s doors on St Vincent Street in 1993 and demanded to be added to the bill.

Creation Records supremo Alan McGee, from East Kilbride, happened to be in the venue at the same time.

Oasis were signed up to his label and the rest is history.

The story featured in 2021 film Creation Stories, with James McClelland and Leo Harvey-Elledge portraying the brothers.

T in the Park – 1994

On Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31, 1994, around 17,000 people descended on Strathclyde Country Park in Motherwell for the first ever T in the Park festival.

Oasis featured on the second to last bottom line of the reveal poster listing the acts who were performing.

Sandwiched between Mike Peters and Whiteout, they played in the King Tut’s Tent.

The band was then catapulted onto worldwide superstardom with the release of their historic debut album, Definitely Maybe, in 1994.

Rock Lomond: The day Oasis took Balloch Park by storm

By August 3, 1996, Oasis had released their hugely successful albums Definitely Maybe and (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?.

Fans were in party mood as they packed trains to Balloch from around the country, desperate to see the band who were dominating the airwaves during the height of the Britpop frenzy.

Some 80,000 fans squeezed their way into Balloch Country Park on the banks of Loch Lomond for two consecutive nights on August 3 and 4, in what remains one of the most memorable outdoor gigs ever held on Scottish soil.

Donald Macleod, the co-promoter behind the sell-out show, said it was an “experience like no other”.

“It was probably the biggest, most significant gig Scotland’s ever put on. It was fantastic. There was a lot more than 80,000 there – they were pulling down fencing”, he said.

“It was an experience like no other. It was really hyper, it was really mad. It was supersonic, as they would say.

“The band took it in their stride, they always did. They had that swagger.

“Just before the band came on, there was a tirade of things getting thrown at the stage and we’re looking up the hill and all these police horses start coming down towards us.

“They charged down. We were like ‘what are they doing?’, then it got quiet. Next moment, they were charging back up the hill, with all the bams chasing after them.

“Getting the teams in place, the security, ten miles of fencing, enough power to power the city of Dundee, thousands of barrels of beer getting sold, the crowd loving it – Wonderwall – what a band. I’ve put on Prince and the likes, but this was something special.”

SECC, Glasgow – 1997

One year after the success of Loch Lomond, the band walked off stage at the SECC in Glasgow, in what was intended to be a triumphant return to the west of Scotland.

During a rendition of Wonderwall in the first of two December dates in 1996, rhythm guitarist Paul ‘’Bonehead’’ Arthurs was hit on the leg by a bottle thrown from the crowd.

Lead singer Liam Gallagher upset the raucous crowd by announcing; “A bottle has been thrown. We’re not standing for it. Good night.”

Confusion filled the air, with many thinking it was a publicity stunt. But after 10 minutes, a spokesman on the PA asked the crowd to leave, and 20 minutes later, the auditorium was still one-third full with protesting fans.

Eleven people were subsequently arrested at the concert in Glasgow’s Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, in a memorable night in Oasis history.

Murrayfield, July 2000

Following the success of “Definitely Maybe” and “What’s the Story (Morning Glory), Oasis’ long-awaited third album “Be Here Now” in 1997 was met by decidedly mixed reviews.

However, the band found a new lease of life several years later with their fourth album “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants” in 1999 and promptly embarked on an epic year-long tour.

That included a mid-tour stop at Murrayfield Stadium in July 2000, supported by Happy Mondays and Doves.

All was not well in the band’s camp at the time, with Bonehead (Paul Arthurs) and Guigsy (Paul McGuigan) thinking about leaving.

But the band put their differences behind them to play a storming set on a sweltering night in the Scottish capital that lives long in the memory.

Murrayfield, June 2009

In the year that Oasis split, a sold-out Murrayfield in Edinburgh was their final show in Scotland.

The band, supported by Kasabian and The Enemy, toured the UK with “Dig Out Your Soul”, which was the last album they released.

On August 28, 2009, Noel Gallagher released a statement on the Oasis website confirming that he would be leaving the band.

He said in a statement that he couldn’t work with Liam for “a day longer”.

However, 14 years later, Oasis have reunited, and fans will be looking forward to seeing the music legends come to Scotland once again.
