Lewis Capaldi has been celebrated as one of the UK’s biggest acts on streaming platforms after being awarded the BRIT Billion prize.
The 26-year-old West Lothian singer was honoured with the gong by the BPI after hitting one billion UK streams as certified by the Official Charts Company.
His 2019 single Someone You Loved became the most-streamed song in the UK of all time with over 600 million streams, while the album it came from, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, was the biggest-selling in 2019 and 2020.
The follow-up, Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent, is due for release later this month, but three of its singles have already shot to number one.
In an Instagram video, Capaldi described the award as “incredible,” adding: “It’s wild. It’s mad to have a stream for each time I’ve slept with one of your mothers.
“Thanks a lot.”
Other award winners include Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, Coldplay, George Ezra, Anne Marie, AJ Tracey, and Headie One.
ABBA and Mariah Carey rounded off the inaugural list of winners of the award.
