Legendary filmmaker and actor Robert Redford has died aged 89.
The Oscar-winning director died early Tuesday morning at his home in Utah, according to the New York Times.
Redford, known for his role in classic films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, died in his sleep, but no cause of death was given.
The actor previously spoke about his Scottish roots, with Redford’s son discussing his milkman grandfather Charles, who was born in Edinburgh.
He also founded the Sundance Film Institute in 1981 to develop independent filmmaking.
The American’s death was confirmed in a statement by the chief executive of publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK.
