James McAvoy 'sucker punched by stranger' at Toronto bar while attending film premiere

James McAvoy was allegedly attacked by a stranger at a bar in Toronto after attending the premiere of his directorial debut.

The Glaswegian actor was in the city for the world premiere of Scottish rap story California Schemin’ at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday.

According to a report from People Magazine, the 46-year-old was at Charlotte’s Room on Monday with his wife and producers when he was “caught off guard” and “sucker punched” by a man just before midnight.

The X-Men star was said to have tried to calm the aggressor down before bar staff removed him.

“James was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out,” an individual close to McAvoy told the outlet.

“James’s back was to him, and the man just punched him.”

The unnamed source said that McAvoy was fine after the alleged punch and stayed at the bar to “laugh off the incident”.

California Schemin’ saw the Filth star step behind the camera for the first time to tell the true story of Silibil N’ Brains, also known as Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, who hid their Dundee heritage in a bid to become rap stars.

Based on the book Straight Outta Scotland by Bain, the film charts the pair’s rise in fame as they maintained the ruse for three years – even going on tour with Eminem.

The film, which stars Samuel Bottomley and Séamus McLean Ross, does not yet have an official release date for Scotland.
