Actor James McAvoy and drag queen Lawrence Chaney were among the winners at the BAFTA Scotland Awards 2021.

Edith Bowman hosted the closed show ceremony on Saturday that celebrated the best of Scottish film, games and television over the last year.

McAvoy scooped the best TV actor award for his role in comedy-drama television film Together.

He said it was a “massive honour” to win.

The movie sees him play opposite Sharon Horgan as a couple forced to re-evaluate themselves and their relationship through the reality of lockdown.

Chaney, who won the second series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, received the favourite ‘Scot on Screen’ Audience Award, voted for by the public.

Limbo, a movie set on a fictional remote Scottish island and follows a group of refugees as they await the results of their asylum claims, won four awards.

Amir El-Masry plays Omar, a young Syrian musician who is burdened by his grandfather’s oud, an Arabic musical instrument, which he has carried all the way from his homeland to the Outer Herbrides.

El-Masry won in the film actor category and Limbo also picked up the best writer, director and feature film awards.

Aberdeen-born Abigail Lawrie won best TV actress for her returning role in the third season of crime drama Tin Star.

Marli Siu won best film actress for her performance in Run, a film set around a fishing town’s late-night drag race scene.

Jude MacLaverty, director of BAFTA Scotland, said: “This year has remained an incredibly challenging one for many, and so we are delighted to have been able to recognise the achievements of the film, games and television industries that have continued to keep us informed and entertained during this time.

“We were also thrilled to be able to welcome back a live, specially invited audience of nominees – albeit a smaller one than usual – and we would like to thank our incredible hosts, guest presenters and wonderful partners for helping us deliver such a brilliant show tonight.

“It really has been absolutely fantastic to celebrate the inspiring work that’s being produced in Scotland over the past year, and we would like to offer our warmest congratulations to all our worthy winners and nominees.”
