The second season of Amazon Original Series hit Good Omens is to be filmed entirely in Scotland this summer.

The adaptation of a Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman novel stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen as a demon and angel working together to prevent the end of the world.

Tennant said: “The return of Good Omens is great news for me, personally. As I get to work with Michael again, and I get to say Neil’s wonderful words once more.

“It’s probably less good for the universe as it almost certainly means there will be some fresh existential threat to its existence to deal with, but, you know – swings and roundabouts…”

Gaiman continues as executive producer of Good Omens and will co-showrun along with Scottish executive producer Douglas Mackinnon, who returns as director.

Gaiman said: “It’s 31 years since Good Omens was published, which means it’s 32 years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel.

“I got to use bits of the sequel in Good Omens – that’s where our angels came from. Terry’s not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with Good Omens, and where the story went next.”

The new season will go beyond the original source material but still revolve around the friendship between Aziraphale, a fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the demon Crowley.

Having been on Earth since “The Beginning” and with the Apocalypse thwarted, Aziraphale and Crowley are back in London when an unexpected messenger presents them with a mystery.

Sheen, who plays Aziraphale, said: “Personally I’m against it, but the world isn’t going to just save itself, is it?

“If David and I can manage to not fall out too badly this time it may even have a chance of getting finished.”

The show is the second Amazon Studios production to film in Scotland with the original thriller The Rig shooting at FirstStage Studios, the new film and TV studio space in Edinburgh.

Isabel Davis, Screen Scotland’s executive director, said: “This is a transformational moment for the Scottish industry, with momentum building across the country through increasing large scale productions using our highly respected crew base and rich depth and variety of locations to a global audience.

“Douglas Mackinnon has been instrumental in bringing this series to Scotland and it’s been a pleasure to support Amazon, Douglas and his team in setting up here.”

Rob Wilkins, John Finnemore and BBC Studios Productions’ head of comedy Josh Cole will executive produce Good Omens alongside Gaiman, with Finnemore serving as co-writer with the author.
