A new band hope to break into the Latvian music industry all the way from Scotland.

Salt, made up of Linda Boyd and sisters Astra Plepe-Bunga and Viktorija Plepe, have had to get creative during the coronavirus pandemic.

Both Linda and Astra have lived in Edinburgh for more than a decade, while Viktorija is currently residing in Latvia’s capital Riga.

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions put in place, the trio were forced to record their debut single and music video remotely.

Firstly, both Linda and Astra recorded the main part of the song before sending the files across to Viktorija to add in her own parts.

The same happened with the photoshoot and video, where they were edited together so as it didn’t look like they were 1000 miles apart.

The band told STV News: “The Covid pandemic has made us work online using Zoom, sending files back and forward and having all management meetings and interviews for TV and radio online.

“It has definitely made things much more complicated, but we have adapted and are having fun. If it wasn’t for the internet, we would have a very large phone bill.”

Salt’s first single, Izkalsim Laimīti – Latvian for forge your happiness, has now been released in the Baltic state.

The band said: “It is about getting through dark times and trying to find your own happiness and not waiting on someone else to make you happy.

“The song was written at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was a message to hold onto the good in your life and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

The trio hope to make a name for themselves in Latvia before re-recording their songs in English to then turn their attention to the UK music scene.

The band added: “We are currently working on another single release and then we are going to put our debut album out.

“We are doing our new single in the same way that we recorded the first song, long distance.

“We hope to perform in Latvia, UK and Russia as soon as the Covid restrictions allow live gigs to happen again.”
