The hit musical comedy Glee is to return with a series reboot, Disney has confirmed.
The series aired from 2009 to 2015 and followed a group of high school students who were members of the New Directions glee club as they navigated issues around relationships, family, sexuality and teamwork.
Disney’s confirmation comes weeks after series creator Ryan Murphy said he had written a script and contacted some of the original cast about returning.
Disney said the series revival has been ordered and will screen on Hulu in a joint post shared on Wednesday, which said: “It’s Official, Glee is returning.”
Details of the storyline and casting has not been revealed.
It comes days after Glee cast members, Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel and Darren Criss, who played his boyfriend Blaine Anderson, reunited at the Royal Albert Hall in London to sing one of their duets, Baby It’s Cold Outside, during Kriss’s solo concert.
In September, Murphy, who also created American Horror Story, told Entertainment Tonight: “I just finished the script an hour ago. So we have a script, Brad and Ian and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something.
“I’ve been in touch with around ten of the original cast members, and it’s very sweet.
“They all had a lot of questions, but they were very enthusiastic about the idea. Nobody’s read it, so we’ll see.
“I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, because we were very close when we were making it.”
The series, which saw the cast perform renditions of hit songs, was positively received by critics and drew in millions of viewers, although the audience declined in later seasons.
It made stars out of lead actors Lea Michele and the late Cory Monteith, who played the couple Rachel Berry and Finn Hudson.
The show also starred Jane Lynch as gym teacher Sue Sylvester, Matthew Morrison as glee club coach Will Schuester and the late Naya Rivera as cheerleader Santana Lopez.
Monteith died in 2013 at the age of 31 from a toxic mix of alcohol and heroin.
Rivera died in 2020 at the age of 33 in an accidental drowning.
Mark Salling, another Glee cast member, took his own life in 2018 at the age of 35 after pleading guilty to child pornography charges.
