Be Charlotte leads first all female song writing camp

Scotland’s first all female song writing camp has taken place in Dundee.

The camp is the brainchild of Scottish pop star Be Charlotte who hopes to encourage more women to work in the music industry.

According to music licensing body PRS only 17% of writers are women.

Over the last two days Charlotte has been working with women from across Europe, she said:  “There’s a lot of statistics out there saying how many more men they’re are in the industry, and that’s sad to read but I don’t want to get down about it.

“This camp is all about not letting that put other women or young girls off and about empowering each other and saying we can all do this.

“Hopefully our generation will be the top headliners at festivals or grabbing all the Emmy’s.”

Over two days professional artists from Scotland and across Europe met at the Botanic Gardens in Dundee to write and perform new music.

Be Charlotte’ song writing camp is part of the city’s Festival of the Future which encourages innovative projects.

Edinburgh based electronic pop artist Rebecca “Shears” Shearing took part in the sessions, she said:”It can feel very alone when you’re working by yourself all of the time and having all these women around it just brings a sense of community.

“It’s so nice to collaborate with all of them and get to know them better.”

Singer songwriter Anna Valia travelled from Glasgow to be at the camp, she said: “When it does feel like you’re surrounded by more men than women it’s so empowering to then be surrounded by all these girls.

“We all feel the same way and we can really have each other’s back and support each other.”

Tonight the women will perform in a sold out concert at Assai Records in Dundee.

Be Charlotte plans to run similar camps in the future hoping more talented female artists will make their break into the music industry.
