Amy Macdonald, Lewis Capaldi and Hue and Cry were among the major winners at this year’s Scottish Music Awards at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom.

The annual event, held on Saturday, recognised the country’s top musical talent while raising £206,000 for music therapy charity Nordoff and Robbins.

Amy Macdonald took home the Best Album Award for her latest release, Is This What You’ve Been Waiting For, while Lewis Capaldi was named Best Live Act.

She said: “It’s really nice, for me, the biggest award is being able to perform and that people want to come to my gigs.

“That’s the most rewarding thing for me. I’m really proud of the album, it’s just a mixture of great songs about life, about things that have happened to me, my friends, and it’s just something everyone can relate to really.”

Accepting his award via video message for Best Live Act Award, Lewis Capaldi said: “I just wanted to say a massive thank you for this award for Best Live Act this year.

“It’s been incredible to come back and have the best year of my life really. It means a lot to get this award and I’m sorry I can’t be there this evening. Hope you all have a lovely evening. And I’ll see you all very soon.”

Other major winners included Hue and Cry, who received the Outstanding Achievement Award, and Nathan Evans and The Saint PHNX Band, who were jointly awarded Artist of the Year.

Rising star James Emmanuel collected the Spotlight Award, while Shay O’Dowd earned the Breakthrough Award. S

Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro was recognised with the King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut Songwriting Award, and Ilyus and Barrientos received the Producer Award.

The Special Recognition Award went to Keith McIvor ‘JD Twitch’, in honour of his contribution to music accepted, and was accepted by his wife Marissa Costello on the night.

The evening featured live performances from Amy Macdonald, James Emmanuel, Kevin Maguire, and Hue and Cry, with broadcaster Edith Bowman returning as host.

Speaking at the event, Bowman said: “It’s a no-brainer for me to come and be a part of this tonight. Nordoff and Robbins is a charity that’s really close to my heart. Any opportunity to celebrate what’s coming out of Scotland — that’s what’s so special about this night.”

Nordoff and Robbins CEO Sandra Schembri praised the winners, saying they “perfectly showcase the wealth of incredible artistry and passion that Scotland’s music scene has to offer.”
