Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx has been hailed as a hero after pulling a young man from a burning vehicle.

Foxx heard a crash and screaming outside the gates of his home in Ventura County, California, on Monday evening.

The 48-year-old star and another unidentified man ran to the overturned, burning pickup truck and pulled Brett Kyle to safety.

Foxx, who won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Ray Charles, played down his actions.

"I don't look at it as heroic," he said. "I just had to do something and it all just worked out.

"As I'm getting him out, I said 'you gotta help me get you out, because I don't want to have to leave you'."

Mr Kyle's father, Brad Kyle, told reporters: "He didn't have to do a thing. I think we all hope that we could do something when the time is there, but the question is 'do we, do we act or do we fear our own lives?' And he did not."

Foxx later posted on Instagram, alongside a picture of him hugging Brad Kyle: "Met the father of the young man from last night today. This is all that matters. That a man, a son, a brother's life was spared last night. God had his arms wrapped around all of us...No heroes...Just happy fathers."

A crash report said the truck hit a drainage pipe before rolling several times, trapping Mr Kyle inside.

"One of the witnesses retrieved a rescue tool from his vehicle allowing the two citizens to break the window, cut the seat belt, and extricate the driver," the report said.

The 32-year-old was taken to hospital with burns. He was later charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
