A woman was airlifted to safety after slipping on rocks and falling 30ft on Cramond Island in the Firth of Forth.

Emergency services were called to reports of an injured woman on the east side of the island, off the coast of Edinburgh, at around 11.54am on Sunday, June 15.

It is understood that the woman sustained a head injury after slipping on rocks and falling between 20 and 30 feet.

Kinghorn’s RNLI lifeboat was launched alongside South Queensferry, Fisherrow and Leven Coastguard Rescue Teams.

Due to the potential severity of the woman’s injuries and the rocky surroundings, the Coastguard helicopter Rescue 199 airlifted the woman to safety.

The casualty was winched and transferred to an ambulance at Cramond beach on the mainland.

A spokesperson for RNLI Kinghorn said: “Our volunteer crew was tasked as part of a multi-agency response after a female fell 20-30′ on the east side of Cramond Island.

“With ambulance crews on scene, we were requested to stand by to provide safety cover and an alternative evacuation option.

“However, with suspected potentially serious injuries and rocky surroundings, it was determined that an air lift by UK Coastguard helicopter Rescue 199 from Prestwick was the best solution.

“The casualty was winched from the location and transferred to an ambulance at Cramond beach.”

A spokesperson for the Coastguard said: “HM Coastguard responded to reports of an injured female at Cramond Island on June 15.

“Alerted at around 11am, South Queensferry, Fisherrow and Leven Coastguard Rescue Teams, an inshore lifeboat from Kinghorn RNLI and the coastguard search and rescue helicopter were sent to the scene.

“The female was transferred by helicopter into the care of the ambulance service.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.
