A man has been rescued after turning his ankle and “hearing a snap” while walking on a hill in the Borders.

The Border Search and Rescue Unit was called to the Cheviots, north of Windy Gyle, on Saturday evening after receiving reports of a walker with a lower leg injury.

Volunteers using off-road vehicles found the man with the help of GPS, which indicated that he was “high up” on the hill.

Crew members treated the walker before a “bumpy journey back down to the valley,” volunteers said.

“The experienced walker was well prepared, and when he turned his ankle and heard a snap, he did exactly the right thing in calling police and asking for mountain rescue.

“The team deployed immediately in the team Landrover Defenders and an ATV.

“The casualty’s location was established using PhoneFind technology and found to be high in the Cheviots, north of Windy Gyle.

“The casualty was quickly assessed and packaged, and pain relief was administered prior to the bumpy journey back down to the valley, where another five team members waited in case they were required.

“The team then transported the casualty onwards to hospital. Best wishes for a swift recovery.”
