A United Airlines flight bound for San Francisco was forced to land at Edinburgh airport after a “burning smell” was reported onboard.

Flight 949, which took off from London at 2.05pm on Thursday, signalled that there was an emergency at around 4.40pm.

The plane, which carried 162 passengers and 12 crew, landed at the capital’s airport as it prepared to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The airline provided accommodation to the customers affected and rebooked them on other flights to their final destinations.

A United Airlines spokesperson said: “United flight 949 safely landed in Edinburgh to address a burning smell.

“We provided customers with hotel accommodations and rebooked them on other flights to their destinations.”
