A dog discovered tied to a tree in a secluded woodland near Dalkeith could have died due to the cold, a charity has warned.
A member of the public came across the four-year-old Belgian Malinois cross, named Demon, next to a burnt-out vehicle in Mayfield on February 13.
After walking past the dog in the afternoon, they returned to check later that day and found him still tied to the tree.
The Scottish SPCA was contacted, and an inspector went to the scene where Demon was found in an “extremely secluded area.
The charity said that the dog could have potentially died due to the cold temperature.
He was also found to be very underweight and had to be treated by the vet before being taken to the Scottish SPCA Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Balerno, Edinburgh.
Demon is continuing to gain weight and has been described as having a friendly nature.
The animal welfare charity was able to contact the dog’s previous owner, who advised that they had rehomed him in January 2025.
The organisation has since tried to engage with the new owner but has been unsuccessful.
Anyone with information about Demon is asked to get in touch with the Helpline on 03000 999 999.
