Keepers at Edinburgh Zoo have confirmed that capybaras born last week are two boys and one girl.

The trio were born overnight on October 28 to parents Luna and Rodney, within their den at the zoo.

Keepers at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland waited a week for the pups to bond with their mum before having them microchipped and confirming their gender.

They were also weighed and had their teeth checked. As an important tool for their survival, their teeth will continually grow throughout their lifetime.

They join a growing family of capybaras at the zoo, with Bru being the first capybara born in Scotland for 18 years when Luna and Rodney welcomed him in May.

He has become accustomed to the spotlight, but will now have to compete with two younger brothers and a sister.

Edinburgh Zoo has invited the public to decide the names of the new pups. Bru was named in honour of the Scottish drink Irn-Bru.

The trio’s arrival came amid family drama after an image of dad Rodney and Luna’s sister, Cali, sharing a moment in the pool went viral.
