Transport officers surrounded and attacked by 'large group' of football fans 

British Transport Police officers were surrounded and assaulted by a “large group” of football fans at a train station in Stirling.

The incident occurred at around 7pm on Sunday, as a group of football fans travelled to Edinburgh from a game in Perth earlier in the day.

St Johnstone had played Hibernian at McDiarmid Park earlier in the day, with kick-off at 3pm.

At Stirling railway station, BTP officers attempted to arrest a man that had been abusive to officers on the train.

As they carried out the arrest, a large group of fans surrounded the officers and assaulted them.

They then fled the scene, boarding a train to Edinburgh Park railway station.

Detectives are urging anyone who saw the incident on the platform to come forward to support the investigation.
