A chef who attacked and raped a young woman the first time he met her has been jailed for five years and three months.

Aaron Hill, who is now 20-years-old, was aged 18 when he took advantage of the victim after they both had been drinking in Arbroath, Angus, in 2023.

At the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday a judge told Hill: “On the complainer’s evidence it must, or ought to, have been obvious to you that she was not consenting.”

Lord Braid said a victim impact statement spoke of the lasting impact of the sex crimes had on the woman, which included anxiety and depression.

The judge said: “Your age does not diminish in any way the harm caused which, as I say, was considerable.”

Hill, formerly of Newton Avenue, Arbroath, had denied charges at an earlier trial but was found guilty.

Lord Braid made a non harassment order banning Hill from contacting or attempting to contact the victim for 15 years.

Defence solicitor advocate Jim Stephenson said Hill suffered adverse childhood experiences, but went on to work successfully as a chef.

He asked the court to take into account the offender’s age and good work record in deciding on an appropriate sentence.

Hill was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely following his sentencing.
