A series of special events are planned to mark the 135th anniversary of Scotland’s “iconic” Forth Bridge, Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop has announced.

Trains carry some three million passengers a year over the famous structure, which was opened on March 4 1890 by the then Prince of Wales – who later became King Edward VII.

At the time of its opening, the bridge, which took some seven years to build, was the world’s longest single cantilever bridge span.

At about a mile and half (2,467 metres) long, it carries trains travelling between Edinburgh and Aberdeen over the Firth of Forth.

A series of community events are planned to mark next week’s anniversary, commencing on Tuesday March 4.

These include an education morning for local schoolchildren and a public exhibition of archive materials showing the history of the crossing.

There will also be presentations from industry experts on the history of the crossing and its ongoing maintenance.

Ms Hyslop said: “The Forth Bridge is an iconic structure, known around the world, and it is very fitting that we mark the 135 years of service it has provided for Scotland’s rail network.

“This series of events will celebrate the crossing’s links with the local community and give people an insight into the history of the bridge, as well as the year-round efforts that go into its maintenance today.

“Around three million passengers cross the Forth Bridge every year, and I look forward to it continuing to play this vital role for our transport network for years to come.”
