Gunshots will be heard in Edinburgh as armed police and the military carry out a training exercise at Murrayfield Stadium.

On Tuesday, afternoon, guns will fire blank ammunition – which sounds the same a live rounds – as officers take part.

Police Scotland has warned the public may see police carrying guns and military personnel, as well as helicopters, arriving at Murrayfield.

The training involving firearms is due to take place between 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

There will be no public access to Murrayfield during this time and nothing will be seen once those involved are placed inside the grounds.

Exercise Kukri Dawn, led and managed by the RAF, is taking place from February 23 until March 13.

One of the objectives is to further improve and test how the military work with the police.

“Exercises are a crucial way for different organisations to learn, share knowledge and work well together,” Police Scotland said.

“It’s important for exercises to be as realistic as possible to fully test a multi-agency response.

“The public should rightly expect Police Scotland, alongside other organisations, to practice and strengthen our response to major incidents. Exercise Kukri Dawn previously took place in 2025.

“We are working with the stadium who have notified residents in the surrounding area.”
