Sex offender is first Scots prisoner to die of coronavirus

John Angus tested positive for Covid-19 after receiving treatment for a fall at HMP Edinburgh.

A serial sex offender at HMP Edinburgh has become the first prisoner to die of coronavirus in Scotland.

John Angus was taken to hospital for treatment after a fall, however medical staff found the 66-year-old had a high temperature and he subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

Angus, who was convicted at Inverness High Court in 2010 of drugging and assaulting a woman, is understood to have had a number of underlying health conditions.

Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course.

Thirty prisoners across the Scottish Prison Service estate are currently self isolating.
