Wildfire warnings cancelled despite crews continuing to battle blaze

Emergency services remain at the scene of a wildfire in the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh

A warning for wildfires in the east of Scotland over the weekend has been cancelled despite crews continuing to battle blazes.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said that due to a change in the weather forecast, the warning for Friday through to Monday has been rescinded.

Crews urged people across Scotland to remain vigilant at all times, follow local guidelines where applicable, and be cautious when using naked flames outdoors.

It comes as crews battle a second wildfire in a week in the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at Torduff Reservoir on Torduff Road at 5.49pm on Thursday.

At the height of the incident, six fire engines were at the scene, and a fire engine and a wildfire unit specialist appliance remained at the scene at 1.45pm on Friday.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Nearby residents were advised to keep windows and doors shut as a precaution while firefighters dealt with the incident due to smoke in the area.

Earlier this week, the Scottish Gamekeepers Association said around 20 gamekeepers answered a call on Monday afternoon to attend an out-of-control fire in the same area.

Six fire engines were mobilised by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, assisted by gamekeepers, who attended with three fogging units, leaf blowers and swipes.

While the joint effort, also assisted by neighbouring farmers, succeeded in extinguishing the fire, birds and nests were scorched as the fire moved over the heather at speed.
