A recycling centre in Fife is set to reopen after a large fire which burned for two weeks.
The Lower Melville Woods Waste Facility caught fire on Tuesday, May 12, and residents near the site were warned of a change in air quality, with levels of nitrogen oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter recorded as having risen at nearby Cupar.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said it stood down from the site on May 27, more than two weeks after the blaze started.
The site will now will reopen on Monday.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is being undertaken by the SFRS, Sepa (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) and Cireco, the company which operates the site.
Fife Council previously said the investigations are expected to take some time.
The waste facility, including the household recycling centre, was closed while recovery and remediation work was carried out.
The site was out of operation for several weeks while the work progressed. Bulky uplifts were temporarily suspended, and people were advised to rebook appointments.
Robin Baird, Chief Executive of Cireco said: “The site clear-up has continued at pace, and I’m pleased that we’re now in a position to reinstate access to the recycling centre from Monday. I’d like to thank our staff and partner agencies for their continued support. We’re also grateful to the public for their patience while this work has been carried out.
“We continue to work closely with SEPA and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to assist with their investigations.”
