A rare baby monkey has been born at Edinburgh Zoo.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) said the baby L’Hoest’s monkey arrived on September 26.

The wildlife conservation charity confirmed it was born to mum Sheli and dad Jamal.

L’Hoest’s monkeys are born with orange fur, which darkens to black at around three months old.

Females usually give birth to a single infant following a five-month gestation. Babies cling to their mothers for several months.

They are native to Central and East Africa and are classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, mainly due to habitat loss from agriculture and logging, as well as hunting for bushmeat.

RZSS said youngster will be named in the coming weeks, once the baby matures and its sex has been determined.

The baby’s arrival means the zoo is now home to five of the rare species.
