Rapist threatened to post intimate images of victim on social media

A rapist threatened to post images of his victim in intimate situations on social media during a campaign of abuse.

Peter Kelly, 59, claimed that he would disclose photos and a film featuring the woman unless she had sex with him.

Kelly exposed himself to the woman and sexually assaulted and raped her during an attack at an address in Edinburgh on February 23, 2024.

He subjected the woman to a course of abusive behaviour beginning in 2022 and which continued into 2024 and took place at locations in the city and at a caravan in East Lothian.

During the offensive conduct, he made a film of the woman in intimate situations without her consent and threatened to reveal footage to members of her family and to post it on social media.

Kelly persistently sent her text messages and made phone and video calls to the woman. He also turned up at her house without warning or invitation and waited outside.

Kelly, formerly of Edinburgh, had denied a series of charges during a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, but was convicted of rape and sexual assault, abusive conduct and breaching a bail order by contacting and approaching the woman.

The trial judge told him: “These are very serious offences.” Lady Drummond said: “You have a limited criminal record, but it is a serious one.”

Kelly was previously jailed for assault with intent to rob and firearms offences.

The judge made a non harassment order prohibiting him from contacting or attempting to contact the woman and placed him on the sex offenders’ register.

She remanded Kelly in custody ahead of a sentencing hearing later this year.
