Rapist spiked women's drinks in nightclub before attacking them

Kenan Baki was seen on CCTV carrying an unconscious victim before raping her and sexually assaulting another.

A man who drugged two women before sexually assaulting them when they fell unconscious has been jailed for nine years.

Kenan Baki, 46, abused the women after they had been on a night out at the Society nightclub in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on September 2, 2023.

A jury at the High Court in Edinburgh saw CCTV footage of Baki throughout the course of the evening as he searched for women.

After approaching the first woman, he slipped an unknown substance into her drink.

Baki sexually assaulted the woman while she was under the influence of that drug before she was led away from him by concerned members of the public.

A short time later, she became unwell, struggling to move and stay awake.

Baki went on to engage a second woman in conversation before taking her to his nearby barber shop in the early hours of the morning.

Jurors could see the woman speaking to the hairdresser as he touched her hair and blew a hairdryer on her face – he looked as if he was going to style her hair. She then passed out and looked lifeless as her head tilted backwards in the chair

Baki then carried her from the barber’s chair whilst she was unconscious and took her to another room where he raped her.

The court heard how police became aware of Baki’s activities and built a case against him. Detectives managed to gather enough evidence from CCTV cameras to show what Baki had been doing.

Baki, of Kirkcaldy, Fife, had denied any wrongdoing, but jurors convicted him on a charge of sexual assault and rape.

At the High Court in Kilmarnock, Baki was given an 11-year extended sentence with a nine-year custodial term.

His name has been added to the sex offenders register indefinitely. A non-harassment order was also granted for an indefinite period.

‘Sexually depraved and predatory’

Making reference to the CCTV clips played to the jury, Lord Cubie said: “The images captured on the CCTV from the barber’s shop will stay with all who watched it – the rape complainer’s loss of consciousness came in an immediate and shocking instantaneous collapse, which elicited no reaction from you because it was plainly expected and what you had planned.

“You were seen to blow air on her face to check her level of unconsciousness, to kiss the clearly unconscious victim; and then chillingly you took her to the back room where the evidence showed that you raped her.

“I reiterate that the Crown proposition that you were on the lookout for someone to have sex with, aided by some substance, was made out.

“This was plain from what we saw of your earlier pursuit of the sexual assault complainer; you claimed in evidence that you were motivated to protect her, but you abandoned her when it was clear that staff had noticed your conduct and had intervened to prevent an escalation.

“All point to your preplanning of your efforts to satisfy your own sexual wishes.

“So this was no spontaneous or opportunistic reflex, but a plan which you made and were determined to execute.

“Your conduct was reprehensible, and such conduct strikes fear into the heart of every woman who chooses to go out.

“It is clear from the victim impact statement that the effects of your conduct were immediate, damaging, widespread and long-lasting. Both harm and culpability are very high.”

Detective inspector Graeme Dursley said: “Baki is a sexual predator who drugged these women so he could take advantage of them for his own sexual gratification. His actions are despicable, and he now faces the consequences.

“I’d like to commend the strength of the women throughout the investigation and court process. I hope the outcome will bring them some form of justice.

“This investigation was complex and our investigation team worked tirelessly with a CCTV co-ordinator to trace Baki’s movements. We were able to provide evidence of him taking drinks to a toilet before returning and giving them to the women.

“We then tracked his movements through the town to the location of the rape. I want to thank them for their dedication, which has led to this conviction.

“I urge anyone who has been a victim of a sexual offence, regardless of when it happened, to come forward and report it to us; with confidence, we will fully investigate. We have specialist officers and partners who will support you throughout.”

Fiona Kirkby, procurator fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, added: “Kenan Baki poses a significant danger to women through his sexually depraved and predatory actions.

“The prosecution case showed he pursued these two women before intentionally drugging them so he could take advantage of their vulnerability.

“He has now been held accountable for this horrific behaviour, which should send a clear message to all those who seek to sexually harm others.

“I would urge anyone affected by similar offending to consider reporting their experiences when they feel ready and able.

“You will be listened to and supported by our trauma-informed staff as we seek to secure justice using all the tools available to us.”
