Rail services in and out of Edinburgh are back up and running following the completion of vital upgrade works at one of Scotland’s busiest junctions.

The major engineering work at Haymarket East Junction started late on Christmas Eve, which led to the closure of services to and from Haymarket and Waverley.

The work was scheduled for the holiday period to minimise disruption, as there were no ScotRail services into Edinburgh on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

The rail firm urged customers to consider making alternative arrangements although replacement buses would be available in place of some of the services.

Since Tuesday night, teams have worked to renew four sets of points and replace 250m of track.

On Sunday, Network Rail Scotland announced the completion of the works.

Posting on Twitter, a spokesperson said: “We’ve completed the vital upgrade works at Haymarket East Junction.

“A massive well done to everyone involved in the project, which has been ongoing since 10.50pm on Christmas Eve.

“We renewed four sets of points and replaced over 250m of track too.

“Thanks, team!”

ScotRail confirmed that services were back up and “running as normal”.

A spokesperson added: “Engineers from Network Rail Scotland worked non-stop from Christmas Eve until early this morning to completely replace one of the busiest junctions on our network.”
