A person has been charged after an object was thrown at a speed camera van from a moving vehicle in Midlothian.
A mobile enforcement camera was travelling on the A68 in Cranston when it was targetted.
The person responsible was traced by road policing officers and charged with culpable and reckless conduct.
Police condemned the incident in a warning against reckless and abusive behaviour towards officers and staff playing a “vital role” in keeping roads safe.
Police Scotland chief inspector of Road Policing, Mark Patterson, said he was committed to tackling behaviour that puts staff within Police Scotland Safety Cameras at risk.
“Our mobile camera enforcement officers have the right to do their job safely without fear of abuse or injury, and reckless or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated,” he said.
He added that the behaviour can cause physical harm to the police staff as well as members of the public.
“Offenders will face arrest and prosecution, and I urge both motorists and passengers to consider their behaviour and the possible consequences.
“I request the support and co-operation of the public to ensure safer roads and working environments for police staff.”
