Bomb squads have removed an “item of historic ordnance” that was found in Edinburgh city centre on Tuesday.

Officers issued an alert of a “potential item of ordnance” on Comely Bank Road in the city centre at around 3.15pm on Tuesday.

Roads were closed as members of the public were urged to avoid the area.

Police then confirmed the item was removed to be safely disposed of by Explosive Ordnance Disposal and there was no wider risk to the public.

A Police Scotland statement read: “All roads have reopened after the removal of an item of historic ordnance found on Comely Bank Rd.

“The incident was reported around 3.15pm on Tues, July 2.

“The item has been removed to be safely disposed of by Explosive Ordnance Disposal and there was no risk to the public.”
