A Scottish university has been subject to a cyber attack.
Heriot Watt University, which is based in Edinburgh, discovered the security breach last week.
The institution said the incident was “contained immediately” and the university is working with police and specialist advisers to determine the cause of the breach.
Heriot Watt added that staff and students were directed to “alternative systems” following the cyber attack.
A Heriot Watt University spokesperson said: “We can confirm that some of our online systems were subject to a cyber attack last week.
“The incident was contained immediately and staff and students alerted to allow them to be supported using alternative systems.
“We are working closely with Police Scotland and specialist advisers to investigate the cause of the incident which will allow us to further strengthen our future security.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Officers are investigating reports of a cyber breach at Heriot Watt University which was reported on Tuesday, March 15.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
