Ten police vans and cars were called to a large disturbance at Edinburgh’s Portobello beach on Friday, as crowds gathered to enjoy the sunshine in the capital.

Officers were alerted at around 3pm and were seen breaking up groups of young people and confiscating alcohol.

It comes after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said there had been an increase in Covid-19 infections among people aged 20 to 40.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a large disturbance on Portobello beach in Edinburgh around 3pm on Friday, 31 July, 2020.

“Officers are currently in attendance, there are no reports of any injuries and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances.”

In May, police were called to disperse large crowds of sunbathers who had gathered on the beach despite Scottish Government advice to “stay at home”.
