A peacock has been tortured and killed during a break-in at a Fife park.

Police have launched an investigation after the bird, known as Malcolm, was found dead at Pittencrieff Park in Dunfermline.

Another bird in the enclosure, Louis, was also badly injured in the attack.

The peacocks are a popular attraction at the park.

A spokesman for Police Scotland, said: “Around 11.50pm on Monday, May 30, 2022, we received a report of animal cruelty following the death of a peacock within Pittencrieff Park, Dunfermline.

“A second peacock was also injured during the incident.

“Officers are following a positive line of inquiry.”

A GoFundMe page which was set up to repair the park’s aviary following the incident has raised thousands in a matter of hours.

The fundraiser, which had a goal of £3,000, reached its target within 12 hours, but generous locals have continued to donate and the total amount raised has more than doubled.

Money raised will go towards vet fees and repairing the aviary and remains open.
