The investigation into the death of a man who was hit by a coach in Edinburgh has been closed one year on from the incident.
Michael Leneghan suffered catastrophic injuries after being struck by a single-decker private coach on Cowgate on November 2 last year.
The 74-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
The area, which is lined with bars and nightclubs, was busy with revellers at the time of the incident due to the Halloween weekend and Scotland’s rugby international against Fiji at Murrayfield.
STV NewsFollowing the crash, police urged members of the public not to share “distressing” images on social media.
A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said: “The Procurator Fiscal has received a report on the death of a 74-year-old man in Edinburgh on November 2, 2024.
“Following investigation, the Procurator Fiscal concluded that no further action was required.
“The family have been informed.”
No arrests or charges have been made in relation to the crash itself.
‘Worst street for pedestrians’
The death unfolded in an area deemed “the worst street in Edinburgh” for pedestrians, but a police investigation found that the road and footpath layout were “unlikely to have been contributing factors” to the incident.
Living Streets, a group which campaigns for local safety and amenity, carried out an audit on the street for Edinburgh City Council nine years ago, which produced the damning findings.
The street’s length was found to be one of the worst in the city, with heavy vehicular traffic causing hazards for pedestrians.
Safety measures restricting vehicles from driving along the street from 10pm were introduced in 2003. A 20mph speed limit and a Low Emission Zone are also in place.
Buses, cars, taxis and HGVs are allowed to use the street prior to the 10pm curfew if they meet the emission standards.
Discussions were reported to have taken place between the police and the local authority following the incident to further restrict vehicle access to the Cowgate between 8pm and 10pm.
The restrictions were implemented for 21 days over the Christmas period.
