Residents in Musselburgh have been allowed back into their homes after explosives experts were called to deal with concerning items found within a car.

Emergency crews and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) crews evacuated homes in the Newbigging area of the East Lothian town on Thursday night following calls raising alarm over the unknown objects.

The vehicle, which was said to be abandoned, was cordoned off while responders carried out an initial investigation.

However the entire operation lasted almost nine hours, with neighbours finally allowed back into their homes on Friday morning.

Police Scotland said there was “no wider risk” to the public.

“The cordons have been lifted in the Newbigging area of Musselburgh after items of concern were discovered in an abandoned vehicle yesterday,” the force said.

“Emergency services and EOD attended, and the objects were made safe.”
