A lorry driver has been treated for “non-life threatening injuries” in hospital after the vehicle he was driving crashed onto railway tracks in East Lothian.
The incident occurred around 1.30pm on Thursday after the lorry, which was being driven on Haddington Road in Wallyford, left the roadway, crashed into a wall, careered down an embankment and came to rest on the East Coast railway line.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and the 41-year-old male lorry driver was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.
Both the railway line and road were closed for around eight hours following the incident to allow investigations to be carried out and to recover the lorry.
Network Rail said on Friday morning that the company worked with East Lothian council to close the St Germains level crossing between Prestonpans and Longniddry to road traffic.
The railway company said: “This is so we can fully assess the impact of any signalling system damage to the crossing equipment.”
Extensive enquiries are ongoing and officers are appealing for anyone with information to contact police.
Sergeant Ross Drummond, of Lothian and Scottish Borders Road Policing Unit, said: “Our investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident are ongoing.
“If you were in the area at the time, please think back and get in touch with us if you have any information which may be able to assist our investigation.
“We are also keen to speak to motorists who may have dash-cam footage of the incident.
“I’d ask anyone with any information to contact Police Scotland via 101 quoting reference number 1714 of Thursday June 23.”
