Man on sinking yacht rescued after ‘cries for help’ heard on radio off Eyemouth, Berwickshire RNLI

A man on a sinking yacht has been rescued near the Scottish Borders, after his ‘cries for help’ were heard over the RNLI radio.

The lone yachtsman had managed to right the boat and climb back in, but was unable to remove the water it had taken on and had become very cold.

His radio had gotten wet and was not working properly so he struggled to communicate – but luckily, Eyemouth RNLI coxswain Andrew Jamieson heard his muffled cries for help over the radio.

The lifeboat was launched shortly after, around 2.15pm on August 29, to search for the small pleasure boat which had capsized about a mile and a half from Eyemouth harbour.

The volunteers brought him aboard the all-weather lifeboat ‘Helen Hastings’ and brought him into Eyemouth lifeboat station, where the crew gave him casualty care.

He was then transferred over to the Scottish Ambulance Service.
