A man has been charged after an elderly pedestrian died in hospital following an alleged hit and run in West Lothian.

The 81-year-old, who has been named as local man William Brown, was crossing Bathgate Road in Blackburn with a walking frame around 7.15pm on July 12 when he was struck.

He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with “critical injuries”, where he later died on July 16.

In a statement his family said: “We as a family are totally devastated at the loss of William Brown (Bill) 81, former janitor at St Kentigern’s Academy.

“William was a loving family man who was a well known and respected member of the local community.”

Following the incident, the force said the rider of the motorbike left the scene and issued an appeal to help trace them.

On Tuesday, police confirmed that a 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

He has been released but is set to appear in court at a later date.
